Here's a possible solution, Thomas.  Try this, it has a more solid
feel: http://u.zelea.com/w/User:Test-bg-ZeleaCom/G/p/sandbox
(hit refresh)

No footprints are shown by default.  You have to hover to see them.
Click once to lock a footprint in place, again to unlock it.  So it's
a toggle switch.
