PS - I just discovered that I *did* properly install it.  For some
reason, it only works when you're logged out.  (There's supposed to be
a user preference under [Misc], but I don't see it.)

Ensure you're logged out, then press [Edit] and [Rich Editor].

No matter, we probably can't keep it.  It still messes up the diffs.
