(BUG) Image downloads and layout glitches

I've temporarily unstaged the home page (no more embedded Votorola)
till we fix the underlying problem. We were seeing initial render
times (from clean cache) of 10-15 s. It's now down to 5 s.

That 5 s is partly the slow ASDL connection we're serving from.
Hopefully we can still improve it a little *and* put the stage back,
both. So I'm working on it.
